Burning Heart
This is another painting in a series during a time of unrest in the artist's life. Allan Linder would not comment on this painting either. He was reluctant to exhibit this work and indicated how personal it was to him. This piece was highly criticized for its symbolism of Eastern and Western faith. In the center of the painting are religious icons of a Cross, opposed by the Eastern philosophy of the yin yang symbol. The astrological symbol of Libra opposed by the Virgo run vertically, and at the center is a Pegasus. All of these elements are brought together by a heart that is pierced by a ghostly dagger. Although the symbol of the heart and the dagger have been seen throughout history, they have been reinterpreted here as a love for all things that are wounded by emotions. The wilted daisy has been said to represent the cleansing and repurifying of the soul through fire. The stream flowing from the heart is not blood, but wine. This symbolism was said to be a metaphor for the blood of Christ. 1999, Acrylic on hand stretched canvas. 36 x 36 |
